Drink Like the Macrons

at the White House State Dinner
May 2, 2018

Len writes,

The Donald is famous for being as abstemious of wine as he is not of tweets. Nonetheless, when the guests to his first state dinner were the President of France, the land of gastronomy, and his wife, he had to put his best food forward, and the wine to go with it, also.

He tasked his wife to make the evening perfect. Melania Trump spent months according to her steward "selecting every item and every detail for the dinner, from the entrée to the chair cushions." She searched out the best wines to go with chevre and Colorado lamb. Both were from Oregon.

We had anticipated this and had already stocked both wines, primarily because they are, in truth, very fine. A few of you can drink like the Macrons, with the bottles we have left. If you want to sample the food, you will have to write the White House for the recipes or import the chef yourself.

I saw Laurent Drouhin two days after the dinner. He assured me that no promotional consideration had been paid. In fact, he did not know that his wine was served until news organizations began calling him up for comment.

He replied with the Domaine Drouhin Oregon mantra, "French soul - Oregon soil."

 Pretty much sums it up.
