This Week's Tasting

Great Rieslings, Great Prices
August 29, 2018

Tonight we'll pit Rieslings from Germany against of the couple of the best that we have tasted from the Finger Lakes region of New York. We are offering some of the Germans at greatly reduced prices for some very sophisticated wines.

Riesling in the Rheinhesssen

We are offering some of the Germans at greatly reduced prices for some very sophisticated wines, but they are only in limited quantities because they come from the remaining stock of an importer who went out of business.

Good Riesling gets better with age so many of these wines are even better now than my notes below made on first release.

We will start with two off-dry Germans that are very nice as aperitif or with food in these warm-weather days. 2014 Schafer-Frohlich Riesling Felseneck Kabinett takes a while to show its stuff. From the bold 2014 vintage, it starts closed, but with time in the glass shows richness and depth. It is extraordinary wine for less than $16.

The 2015 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett is a joyfully friendly wine. Its importer was so enthusiastic about the great 2015 vintage, the vineyard (one of Mosel's greatest) and Ernst Loosen, the winemaker, that they bought too much which is why we can offer this $27 wine at less than $20. Not to be missed.

Louis Barruol, famous for his st. Cosme Rhones set up an unlikely partnership with a local grower in the Finger Lakes because he felt it that it was a place to make great Riesling. the single vineyard 2016 Forge Riesling Lower Caywood shows why. It has the soft depth of many an fine Alsatian riesling, and will go well with almost any fish and most light meat dishes.

Where the Forge has richness, 2016 Ravines Riesling White Springs Vineyard has cut. Ravines has been in the forefront of serious Finger Lakes Riesling. Both lilting and concentrated, it is Riesling at its ethereal best.

Wagner Stempel is one of the best estates in the Rheinhessen. Their 2014 Dry Riesling vom Porphyr the richness and volnaic silica character of the soils of their estate in Siefersheim. It is a big wine, full fleshed enough for the grill, and for the cear.

Many aficionados of German wine think that spatlese means sweet. Not true. It actually denotes richness and concentration. When made in a trocken, dry style like the extraordinary 2015 Schloss Lieser Riesling Trocken Spatlese this means a lot of depth and richness. The major German wine magazine called Schloss Lieser, that country's Winery of the Year in 2015, the year this was made. It has extraordinary richness and spice and concentration. Only three cases at its greatly reduced price.
