At a recent extensive tasting of Austrian wines, a white and a red jumped out for flavor and value.
White
2022 Ingrid Groiss Braitenpuechtorff Gemischter Satz
Ingrid is the newest hot-shot winemaker to emerge on the Austrian wine scene. After taking over the management and winemaking of her grandmother's vineyards, she makes some of the most compelling whites in her region.
Gemischter Satz is a traditional Austrian white field blend. In the Braitenpuechtorff towns, Ingrid blends 17 different grape varieties harvested and co-fermented together. Bold aromas of white peaches, lily of the valley, flint, lemongrass, melons, and ripe pear fill the glass. Yet the sheer ripe and caressing palate is pushed back afresh with an instantaneous attack of pure minerality, creating a dynamic interplay of fruit, minerals, and acidity that is simply irresistible!

Red
2021 Paul Achs – Edelgrund Blaufrankisch
A wine with some meat on the bone. Spicy dark fruit balanced with a velvety richness provides a wine with some enjoyable substance. A great wine to pair with food and approachable enough to enjoy by itself!
Wine Spectator "This has a decadent meaty aroma, with a racy intensity to the dark cherry and red plum flavors, which show accents of shiso leaf. The powerfully smoky finish has a tannic kick with licorice notes. –" Very Good Plus $37, case $31.50
