This Week's Tasting

Aglianico and Friends
April 18, 2018

Well, we did spicy Mediterranean reds last week with one serious omission. Certainly one of the most well known of this group is Aglianico wine from Campania and Basilicata. In fact two very well known Italian wine experts, Ian d’agata and Marco di Grazio, consider Aglianico to be on par with the greatest Italian wine grapes. So this week we will make up for it by tasting four of those.

Patrizia

“Patrizia at Le Vigne de Raito”

We will start the tasting with two whites in the vain hope that springtime will finally arrive.

Mastroberardino is in a very real way the winery that saved the wine heritage of Campania. For centuries they have made and promoted the native grapes of the region. Decades of widespread poverty and then the aftermath of World War II made it difficult for viticulture. Now the arrow has turned and Campania is very healthy. The 2016 Mastroberardino Greco di Tufo is a great example of one of Campania’s three most famous white grapes. The wine is deep in color and richly flavored with peaches, flowers and herbs. Fiano di Avellino is cultivated in an area very close to Tufo. The 2013 Vigne Guadagno Fiano di Avellino Sant’Aniello is produced by a relatively new winery founded by brothers Giuseppe and Pasquale. The Fiano is terrific with smoky stone fruits and strong mineral quality surrounded by energy and texture.

We will begin the reds with the 2011 Casa di Baal Aglianico. Casa di Baal is owned and run by the Salerno family who have always farmed organically and still believe in biodiversity on their property. This shows the typical white pepper, leather and dark fruit character with a distinct balsam influence. Not far away sits one of our favorite new wineries. Here in Raita, Patrizia Malanga has restored an ancient property complete with cellars that were built hundreds of years ago. She grows both Aglianico and Piedirosso grapes. The 2011 La Vigne de Raito is a blend of those two grapes and is good enough to attain cult status. Here we find notes of black cherry, truffle and spice with hints of cedar. If you go to Campania make time to visit this amazing property overlooking the Bay of Salerno.

Elena Fucci is another woman who has made her mark in the annals of Aglianico, only this time on Vulture mountain in Basilicata. The 2013 Elena Fucci Aglianico del Vulture Titolo also has a peppercorn spice and dark fruit with a balsam character and notes of licorice. Lastly we will go back to Campania into the most famous area for Aglianico- Taurasi. The 2012 Antonio Caggiano Taurasi Vigna Machia dei Goti is a classic high end Aglianico with cherry and blackberry accented by spice and truffle. A very complete wine. Antonio Caggiano built the new winery in 1990 and it is an archeological wonder.
