2018 Bordeaux Futures prices here - read more...

Mike writes, "The press has dubbed 2018 another “not to be missed” vintage. Problems at the beginning of the growing season reduced the crops while hot, dry weather through most of it made for very concentrated wines of extraordinary ripeness and sensuality."

By and large, they will be for earlier, more hedonic drinking than 2015s or 2016s. However, vagaries of weather challenged winemakers, so there is more variance than in other recent vintages. I do not doubt the overall quality. Reviewers across the board have raved about hundreds and hundreds of wines that are selling en premeur from $15 per bottle and up.

Who should buy en premeur? Which chateau to buy?  If you don’t age wines in a cellar and usually purchase in the $15-$50 range, you might be as well off with one of the many 2015s that are already here or the 2016s that will be arriving soon. The pricing of these chateaux is pretty very close to what it was en premeur.

The 2018s of this level may be the same.  On the other hand, you might want 2018s for a character that is excellent in a different way, richer and more sumptuous. Also because of reduced crop levels, highly sought-after wines may disappear at their initial premeur prices.

If you maintain a cellar to age and collect wines from specific chateau in outstanding vintages, this is a vintage to buy. All reviewers and chateau owners talk about the balance of fruit and acidity in very alcoholic (13.5 - 14) wines. They are likely to have a long drinking window.

These upper level chateaux have not yet released pricing. My guess is that they will release a small quantity en premeur at roughly 2016 levels. If the sales are strong additional wine will be released at higher prices. Two initial examples are: the highly rated Chateau L’Angelus (some call it one of the wines of the vintage). We offered the 2016 at $406 per bottle. The difference is that our allocation of 2018 at $357 per bottle is 1/3 of what it was in 2016. Chateau Dauzac 2018, also highly rated, is being sold at the same price as 2016. Again we could get as much of the 2016 as we wanted. In 2018 we are very limited at the premeur price.

Only time will tell how accurate I am. But it sure looks to me like the initial pricing/quantities for the most in demand chateaux won’t last for long.
