2015 Domaine Giraud

Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition
August 1, 2017

"Their 2015s are blockbusters that I’ll certainly be buying!"

- Jeb Dunnock, Wine Advocate

Although the Girauds have been growing grapes in Chateauneuf for six generations, they began their domain only in 1974. Now they farm 30 hectares organically, and make their own in Chateauneuf's former distillery.

Under the direction of sister and brother Marie and Pierre, their wines have achieved great distinction. Jeb Dunnock writes in the Wine Advocate "with assistance from consultant Philippe Cambie, this estate has quickly risen into the tiny handful of top estates in Châteauneuf du Pape."

French critics Bettane & Desseauve, "Few vines in all [the Southern Rhone] are so wonderfully cultivated as those of François Giraud and his sister Marie. They are sincere winemakers, dedicated to the full expression of Provençal grapes."

Their method combines the traditional and the modern. Destemmed grapes are cool fermented in concrete vats, with the the Syrah portion aged 18 months in old wood barrels.

The Domaine Giraud Chateauneufs display a verve and focus that stands out above most of their peers. Their wines excite the palate. The 2015 is deeper, fuller, and more brooding than most. It is a deep, solid wine that you can drink now with a couple of hours of decanting or age for a decade or more. I loved it both for now and for its promise for the future.

Jeb Dunnock "A terrific base cuvée that has loads to love, it offers lots of black cherries, blackcurrants, peppery herbs and licorice in a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated style."

Josh Raynolds Vinous "Bright ruby. Intense cherry and red berry aromas pick up notes of incense, anise and lavender with aeration. Spicy, concentrated and focused on the palate, offering appealingly sweet raspberry, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Closes sweet and quite long, with harmonious tannins building slowly folding into the juicy fruit."
