This Week's Tasting

2015 Burgundies
January 3, 2018

2015 is an exceptional vintage for red Burgundy. The wines are very ripe and very pleasing at a very young age. In my tastings immediately ingratiating fruit that is seductive and very pleasing at first taste, reminded me of the 1985 vintage. Unlike 1985, there is more concentration and a firm acid-based background that betokens good aging.

Volnay in the Autumn

"in the Côte de Nuits the best vintage since 2005

In the Côte de Beaune the best vintage since 1999. Alan Meadows, Burghound

"You Are So Going To Want Them"  - Steve Tanzer

These are wines that belong in every Burgundy or Pinot Noir lover's cellar.

It was a vintage of such ripeness that even vineyards with the less favored exposure could produce delicious wines. This week we taste four such “lesser” wines that arrive at very reasonable prices, and also two very good village wines. I think you will find them very pleasing.

Christophe Coillot. is a second generation grower with 11 ha based in Marsannay The estate is 11 hectares spread out over 12 different appellations.  Due to the low yields, production is small, terroir-driven wines as naturally as possible, with the least amount of intervention in the vineyard.

2015 Coillot Bourgogne Rouge Pinot Noir; Color: light red black; Aroma: rather deep very full, bright cherry cranberry overtones later closing up nice depth; Mouth: bright & clean, firm, deep, peppery tannin, gevrey like smooth very clean a touch of acidity, dense fine tannins, light smoke; Very Good Plus 24.99; Mixed Case, 22.49; Case, 21.24 limited

Thomas Bouley runs the ancestral domain involved in a with minimal intervention in the vineyard or cellar. This is a source of very precise, delineated wines.

2015 Bouley Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune

"A slightly cooler and more elegant nose offers up liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, kirsch and violet undertones. The mouth feel of the middle weight flavors is slightly finer though at the expense of a bit of richness and this refinement continues onto the focused, saline and well-balanced finish. Burghound

Good dark red. Enticing minerality to the aromas of redcurrant and tobacco. Sweeton the palate r, conveying a strong impression of acidity but more pliancy of texture. Very pure and precise. Tanzer   $42; Mixed Case, 37.8; Case, 35.7

David Duband is rated as one of the best producers in the Cote de Nuits by the Revue du Vin de France. . His wines are balanced, intense but harmonious, bright and refined, with an aging potential built on elegance and not just on power. When we opened his Louis at Christmas a burgundy-loving friend of mine exclaimed "this is what Burgundy is about"

2015 David Duband Hautes Cotes de Nuits Louis Auguste

"rich and supple, with an excellent fresh maturity in the expression of its fruit, finely spiced, shines with its balance - RVF

"A fresh and pretty nose features notes of red currant, cherry, earth and ample floral influence. The racy and intense middle weight flavors display a subtle minerality on the attractively textured, balanced and lingering finish. This is a lovely effort for its level and worth a look." Burghound  $45; Mixed Case, 40.5; Case, 38.25

2015 David Duband Cote de Nuits Villages

Steve Tanzer "Bright medium red. Some very ripe liqueur-like and chocolatey qualitites to the black raspberry aroma. Nicely concentrated and firm, with the wine's ripe blackberry and black raspberry fruit flavors leavened by a more tart cranberry note and complicated by salty minerality. The firmly tannic finish shows good sneaky length."

53; Mixed Case, 47.7; Case, 45.05

2015 Drouhin Santenay; Aroma: Very rich very dense, pretty forward; Mouth: Clean smooth. Rather dense sweet , very rich; Very Good Plus 36; Mixed Case, 32.4; Case, 30.6

Lignier-Michelot is an estate on the rise with wines that also favor elegance and finesse more than power. It's old vines Morey was a great success for the vintage.

2015 Lignier Michelot-Morey St. Denis Vieilles Vignes

"An even more complex nose offers up broad-ranging aromas of plum, red currant, spice, violet, lilac and earth. The excellent depth continues onto the rich, full-bodied and muscular middle weight flavors that possess very good mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a solidly persistent finish that exhibits virtually no rusticity. This is a terrific Morey villages and well-worth your interest." Burghound

 $75; Mixed Case, 67.5; Case, 63.75

2015 Burgundy Case: Special, two each of the above wines - $470

Bouley Volnay          $64.00                         50 Net

"Bright ruby-red. Black raspberry and licorice aromas are accented by a pungent stony element. Densely packed, concentrated, chewy wine with an almost chocolatey richness leavened on the back by saline mineral grip. taNZER

Bouley Volnay Vieilles Vignes                   $85.00     67

"Bright, dark red-ruby. Redcurrant aroma along with a distinct fresh blood note from the iron-rich soil. At once dense and juicy, conveying a lovely inner-mouth floral quality and a light touch. Delivers very good definition and flavor intensity for village wine. There's a tiny-berry creaminess and generosity of texture here that's perfectly supported by a strong saline spine. Tanzer
