2014 Sottimano

Barbaresco for Burgundy Lovers (and Barbaresco Lovers)
May 8, 2018

From the beginning, Rino and Anna Sottimano set out to create Barbaresco with utmost care in the vineyards and a natural approach in the winery. Rino was one of the very first to green harvest in the growing season to produce more concentration in the wines.

Today the Sottimanos bottle five single vineyard wines. Today’s offer is for the three from 2014 that have been released. 2014 turned out to be a great vintage for Barbaresco. The 2014 Sottimano Barbaresco Cotta is from the first vineyard that Rino bought in Neive. The wine shows great polyphenolic balance and a round tannic structure. The 2004 Sottimano Barbaresco Pajore is from a vineyard in Treiso  and shows the spicy and floral aromas and velvety elegant tannins. The 2014 Sottimano Barbaresco Fausoni gives us fantastic bouquet and concentration.

These three wines are made exactly the same way. The differences are strictly a result of individual terroir. The wines are aged in French oak barrels of which 15% are new. The barrels are coopered expressly for Sottimano by Francois Freres in Burgundy. These guys will only make barrels for wineries of which they approve, the most famous of which is Domaine de la Romanee Conti.

For quite a few years Anna and Rino have been joined by daughter and son Elena and Andrea and all share the same passion and dedication. I first tasted Sottimano with Andrea about 15 years ago and we have had them in the store ever since.

So to explain my claim in the subject line that these are wines for Burgundy  lovers, consider the following. The quality level here is the same as the best Premier and Grand Cru Burgundies. Sottimano wines are made in a completely natural way with indigenous yeasts and malolactic fermentation on the lees in barrel. Great Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo both give us wines that are emotionally satisfying. Last, at Sottimano, they sell these wines for a lot less money.
