2013 Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero

The Original Piedmont Grand Cru
September 19, 2017

The Monvigliero hill in Verduno has on it what was identified back in the 1800s as one of the two finest vineyards in all of Barolo. Much more recently Enrico Scavino was able to acquire a very fine plot of the Monvigliero vineyard and has been bottling it under the Paolo Scavino label since 2007. The 2013 Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero is a masterpiece. With the same exacting viticultural practices that the Scavinos use in all their vineyards and a minimal use of new oak, this wine expresses the telltale balsamic character of Monvigliero beautifully. I first tasted this wine out of bottle with Elisa (alongside her very fine dog Hercule) and Enrico this June at the winery and was extremely happy.

What sets Movigliero apart is the bright white high limestone content in the soil. I tell people if they visit this ground they should wear sunglasses. The original owner and proponent of the vineyard and the town of Verduno was Gian Battista Burlotto. The 2013 Burlotto Monvigliero is sold out. I strongly suggest that those of you familiar with this vineyard now get some of the Paolo Scavino. You will be glad you did.
This Wine is Here Now

2013 Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero: The wine exhibits great finesse and aromatic complexity, distinctly floral, spicy, savory, balsamic in its expression. The nose is vivid and compound, showing the characteristic truffle and cedar. The texture is focused. An extremely elegant cru, and full of character. Outstanding 68/bottle

Special six pack: Six bottles of the above for a special price of $347
