2013 Barolos

The Hype is Correct
November 14, 2017

Barolo Country

It is true that great producers make wine worth buying no matter what the vintage is like. It is also true that every once in a while a vintage happens where everything is perfect and legendary wines get produced. 2013 is one of those in Piedmont. This offer is for a few that I really like. All of these are very limited except there is a reasonable supply of the “entry level” 2013 Brovia Barolo.

For these wines there are single bottle prices. You can choose any six bottles and receive a 10% discount. You can mix any 12 bottles for a 15% discount. All of the wines are in the store.

G. D. Vajra

The G D Vajra estate sits in the highest elevation in Barolo just between the village of Barolo and La Morra. Aldo Vajra says that his purpose in life is to produce beauty. Along with Milena he built and designed this winery with vineyards that had been planted by his grandfather. Today the winery is a pure family affair with Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isodoro all helping out. What we have here is a bunch of philosophers and artists who make some of the most elegant and pure Barolos.

GD Vajra Barolo Ravera: Outstanding  83/bottle

Luigi Baudana

Luigi Baudana is the last scion of one of the oldest wine producing families in Serralunga. With no heirs, Luigi and Fiorina began to look for a future for their small estate.  Through Aldo they got to know Giuseppe Vajra and really admired his enthusiasm and respect for the tradition of the estate. So they sold the farm to the Vajras. The Baudana and the Ceretta vineyards are two of the great ones in Serralunga d’Alba. The total production of each is 300 cases.

E Pira- Chiara Boschis

OK, so those of you who know me know that Chiara Boschis is one of my favorite people. And among the producers in Barolo and Barbaresco she is one of everyone’s favorite producers. So it is not just me that likes these wines so much. Chiara owns one of the best plots in the Cannubi vineyard. The wine she makes is classic with that famous hint of mint flowing through from start to finish. She recently acquired a great piece of the Mosconi vineyard in Monforte. Again the wine is classic with the note of orange zest in the aromas. The Via Nuova is a blend of fruit from that vineyard along with some of the other two. Classic Barolo.

E Pira- Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi:  Superb 102/bottle

E Pira- Chiara Boschis Barolo MosconiSuperb  95/bottle

E Pira- Chiara Boschis Barolo Via Nuova:  Outstanding 84/bottle

Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino is a family winery with an excellent history of producing wines from some of the best vineyards throughout the Barolo area. The last they acquired was a great piece of Monvigliero in Verduno. This is without question one of my favorite wines of the vintage in 2013. Everything else they made is great as well. I just wanted to get this to you before it is all gone. Hi Elisa.

Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero: Superb  65/bottle

The Brovia estate in Castiglione Falletto dates back to 1863. Like all of the others in this offer, this is a family affair. Giacinto Brovia worked sixty harvests and established Brovia as the producer of some of the finest Barolos made. Daughters Cristina and Elena are the new generation and they are carrying on the legacy just fine. This is a traditional and organic estate with some of the best holdings in Castiglione as well as a nice little plot in Serralunga.

Brovia Barolo: Outstanding 54/bottle

Brovia Barolo Gablet SueOutstanding 82/bottle

Brovia Barolo Rocche di Castiglione: Superb 93/bottle

Brovia Barolo Villero:  Superb   93/bottle

Brovia Barolo Brea-Ca MiaSuperb  93/bottle

Again, until they are sold out, all of these wines mix and match for discounts. I think that the 2013 is the best vintage in Piedmont since 1978 and all the wines in this offer come with our highest recommendation.
