We are pleased to welcome Derek Grimm, Benriach Brand ambassador for two tastings of that renowned Speyside distillery. Ruggedly beautiful, Benriach stands on the site of the old Riach farm in north Speyside, drawing water from the mineral-rich aquifer deep beneath the distillery.
We will explore Benriach’s long-standing tradition of distilling multiple styles which include classic both unpeated and Highland peated. Both styles are matured in three casks of different woods, the distillery’s releases explore the fa gamut of flavor possibilities and produce some of Speyside’s richest, most multi-layered whiskies.

The Classic Ten encapsulates the signature smooth and multi-layered character of Benriach. It spends at least ten years in bourbon barrels, sherry casks and virgin oak, to create layers of luscious orchard fruit, sumptuous honeyed malt and toasted oak, all interwoven with a subtle trace of smoke. The Smoky Ten - In the early 1970s, Benriach broke convention in Speyside by returning to distilling batches of whisky in the old, 19th century style, using malted barley smoked with peated Benriach whiskies. The Smoky Ten has been crafted from a combination of unpeated and peated spirit and three-cask matured for at least ten years in bourbon barrels, Jamaican rum casks and toasted virgin oak. The whiskies are then expertly married to create smooth layers of sun ripened fruit, aromatic smoke and toasted oak spice, lingering into the perfectly balanced sweet and smoky finish. The Classic Twelve is three cask matured for at least twelve years in sherry casks, bourbon barrels and port casks. The whisky from each cask is then expertly married together to create a smooth, sherry-rich single malt, layered with baked fruit, maple honey and cocoa, perfectly balanced with a lingering sultana and spiced mocha finish. The Smoky Twelve is the perfect marriage of fruit, malt, oak and rich layers of smoke. Crafted from a combination of unpeated and peated spirit , itmn is three-cask matured for at least twelve years in bourbon barrels, sherry casks, and Marsala wine casks. The whiskies are then expertly married to create a smooth, creamy single malt, multilayered with flavors of ripened fruit, aromatic smoky sweetness and warming oak spice. The Sixteen: After sixteen years of maturation, Benriach’s signature style develops more richly. Three-cask maturation in bourbon, sherry and virgin oak brings layers of stone fruit, smooth creamy malt, wild honey and nutty oak spice. Regular $134; Tasting $113.99

NOSE: Beautifully fragrant with ripe peach and honeysuckle, hints of violet and lavender come through on the nose – balanced with vanilla and creamed coconut from the toasted American oak. A medley of tropical fruit comes to the front, with melon, peaches, apricot, Vibrant citrus, honey, caramel vanilla custard, and rich crème brulee from the oak
PALATE: Luxurious and viscous honey, butterscotch, and fresh fruits coat the palate, followed by cereal notes of sweet, syrup-soaked porridge, barley sugar, and toasted oak. Vibrant tropical fruit and the subtle presence of toasted oak with a hint of leather follow, with honeycomb adding to the smooth, sweet character.
FINISH: The classic minerality for which Bruichladdich is renowned, perfectly balanced with oak, stone fruit, and a delicate floral bouquet. $185

COLOR: Rich tawny
NOSE: Dried fruits, leather, and a hint of citrus immediately open on the nose, followed by a fresh sea breeze. Sweet fruit and floral notes with poached pear, delicate rose hip syrup, black cherry, and sweet mango. The aromas open to cedar and mellow oak, complemented with butterscotch, praline, honey, and a hint of cinnamon. Warming oats are balanced with fragrant notes of rose and pear drops.
PALATE: Dried fruits, dates, raisins, barley sugar, leather, and oak open on the palate, followed by butterscotch sweetness, praline, and hints of coconut and fresh citrus. Sweet apple and pear are married with toasted oak, warming wood spice, dark plums, and marzipan, with layers of depth opening with each sip.
FINISH: Oak, dried fruit, with Christmas cake notes of sultanas, fig, marzipan, and lingering honey, adding to the beautifully rounded finish.$749, two available

This Thursday, Brian Johnson will taste us on some very nice single malts from Mossburn Distillers. The Mossburn Distillers have been around for many years; although you may not have heard of them, they have been buying casks and laying them down until they are ready to bottle. This tasting will introduce Mossburn Foursquare. It started as a classic expression of Speyside Malt Whisky, first aged for over 12 years in ex-bourbon casks before re-aging in American oak casks that previously contained mature Foursquare rums. It isreleased at batch strength, 57.7 % abv.
The Mossburn folks have also started a new distillery on Skye, the isle’s first new one in 190 years. Torabhaig blends traditional and contemporary approaches. It has been fully operational since January 2017. They distill in beautiful copper stills but ferment in traditional wooden washbacks that add flavor complexity.
The Cask Strength is a limited release, a bolder expression of Allt Gleann, and will close the Allt Gleann chapter of the Legacy Series. Bottled unreduced, it shows Torabhaig’s confidence in their mission and the strength of their style.
We will taste eight malts, all under $100. The Tasting is free. Mark your calendar; this will be a very nice tasting. It will take place on Thursday at 4:30 and 6:00 P.M.
