SOUTH AFRICA - Stellenbosch
Heady Weekday Wines
2016 Reyneke Syrah
The Modern
Reyneke is a newer estate, both organic and biodynamic. Their Syrah is big and bold. The 2016 is stronger and more reticent to start than was the 2015. It wants some air to show a heap of black cherry and olive, like the richer of its peers from the northern Rhone. but has the ripeness and depth of South Africa.
It needs time in the glass to open, but when it does, it's a deep and powerful expression of the grape.
2016 Reyneke Syrah; Color: very dark; Aroma: reserved spice, heady plum, rather black pepper, plum; Mouth: smooth texture, rich, very full, soft spice, dark fruit, light fruit on very good length; Very Good Plus Was $25 19.99; dozen discount, 16.99
The Traditional
On the more traditional side Rustenberg is an estate there has been growing vines since the mid 18th century. Revived in the 1930s , it now produces two extraordinary wines they are considered among the best in South Africa. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is their not so basic wine. It is hearty rich and smoky in the traditional South African style. Very Good Was $21, Now 17.99, dozen discount, 46.99
Savory fruit for roasts, even chili
Our favorite mid -range Zinfandel
Andis in California's eastern Sierra Foothills makes old-style Zinfandel, It has fruit well enough, but also a broad bottom of fine-grained tannins that make give it winter heft for It's developed quite a following here we're happy to introduce the new vintage with a rare discount.
This well-balanced, layered, and seamless wine offers tons of fresh blackberry and raspberry flavors wrapped in a bracing texture of fine-grained tannins. Good acidity and a great sense of focus add to its charms. Some new oak, rich with fine-grained tannin
Concentrated aromas of black pepper, plum, and coffee bean. Its luxe mouthfeel is a focused study of black fruit and supple tannins. Very Good Plus Reg 24 Now 21, dozen discount 17.99
Saturated pure fruits
A modern take on the traditional Napa field blend; Zinfandel and Petite Sirah with a dose of Charbono and a dash each of Mourvedre and Merlot - Like The Prisoner but graceful and fruit-forward.
"big, bodacious, and above all, balanced. Dark purple in color with aromas of strawberries, cracked black pepper, and toasted coconut cream pie dusted with grated cinnamon bark, a serious red wine. On the palate, it offers a lively and focused mouthfeel with mixed berry flavors and an amazing balance of fruit, tannin, and acidity. Was $34 Now 25.99, dozen discount 21.99
Fruit & Structure
Rhone-like richness
Maury in Roussillon is best known for its excellent lightly fortified vin doux. . but it's black schist soils are good terroir for Rhone-style reds. In this one, the softness of Grenache is balanced by the mineral backbone extracted from black schist soils. Syrah and Carignan add pronounced spicy and peppery components.
Wine Advocate "subtle notes of leather layered over big black-cherry fruit and hints of garrigue and crushed stone… it's full-bodied, supple and expansive in the mouth, where it picks up nuances of raspberries and pencil shavings before finishing with gently dusty tannins and a note of dark chocolate." Was 24, Now 19.99 dozen discount 16.99
Painterly Purity
When Courbissac winemaker Brunhilde Claux visited the store, this of her wines particularly struck me for its purity and precision. Most Minervois is rustic in style, but Brunhilde wanted something more elegant and refined. She lightly vinified grapes from 70-year-old Cinsault vines and aged the wine 6 months in large terra cotta jars. This is a wine of painterly elegance and strikingly lifted aroma and fruit. It comes from Farradjales means black earth in old Catalan.
Aroma: light fresh very pretty, very light clean, juicy, clean bright; Mouth: juicy rather pretty forward bright acid, clean fine, elegant, long, very fine tannins. pure; Very Good - Excellent Normally 37; Now 29.99, dozen discount 25.99
