Leonetti

Washington's Columbia River Valley makes greatCabernet based wines because its high desert climate makes for warm sunny, fruit ripening days and cold nights preserve freshness in the wine. Of New World wines, theymost resemble the style and structure of fine Bordeaux.

Many consider Leonetti to be a Washington answer to Bordeaux's first growths. It has been ably run by two generations of the Figgins family since 1977. Robert Parker called Leonetti, “unquestionably Washington state's finest Cabernet Sauvignon producer."

Jeb Dunnock wrote “Leonetti Cellars produces seriously rich efforts that have a perfect blend of power and finesse, with gorgeously managed tannin, seamless textures and awesome purity."

Their flagship is the Cabernet Based Reserve blend, all from Walla Walla estate fruitIn the ripe 2014 vintage it was  79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, and 8% Petit Verdot. The praise from the critics has been unanimous:

“Rich and precise, balancing plush flavors with a firm, refined structure. The blackberry espresso and black olive accents finish with big but polished tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2019 through 2025. — Tim Fish, WS

“scents of cassis, black cherry and brambly purple berries complicated by a note of licorice pastille. Wonderfully creamy in the middle, showing more obvious fruit than the Cabernet but with lovely framing energy. Finishes very strong and long, with fully ripe, suave, slowly mounting tannins saturating the entire palate.  On first taste, this wine impressed with its plushness but it quickly closed down in the glass. It should be long-lived. “ - Steve Tanzer, Vinous

“sensational notes of crème de cassis, graphite, lead pencil shavings and hints of damp herbs. Rich, full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated, tannic and impeccably balanced, it's unquestionably one of the gems in this vintage. It needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will keep for two decades or more.”- Jeb Dunnock, Wine Advocate
