Israeli Wines - Passover

A few wines stood out in tasters’ comments. The least expensive red and white got favorable notes, thePinot Gris for its bright freshness and the Malbec for its softness and up front fruit.
March 15, 2018

Two frequently mentioned reds were the 2013 Dalton Alma Scarlet GSM a Rhone blend , and expecially the 2016 Gvaot Vineyard “Vineyard Dance”. The former had a bright spiciness; the latter, a Bordeaux blend, had a very interesting Cabernet based complexity. To me, it was more in the style of Napa or Sonoma, but nonetheless excellent. Both got the imprimatur of Tanya G , who is newly arrived from Israel.

The Shiloh Chardonnay had the freshness and bright ripe fruit that one might expect from Sonoma County. The 2014 Jerusalem Vineyard Premium Shiraz 3400 had the echoes of leather and plum like you find in Australian Shiraz, but was more lively and flowing than most of those. 3400, refers to the year in the Hebrew calendar when Cyrus the Great permitted the Jews to return to Palestine from their Babylonian exile.

All these wines are kosher for Passover. Some are mevrushal.
