Last Week's Tasting

Champagne
November 30, 2017

Usually in this space, we try to tell you what the people who came to the tasting liked - or did not so much. We could not poll the over 250 people at last week's champagne tasting, so we can only tell you what people bought.

They must have liked some of the them at our prices, because we had more bottles ordered than ever before. Individuals bought anywhere from a few bottles to several cases, so the fairest way to tell you would be by which was ordered by largest number of individuals. Given the vast price range, 15.99 to $575 per bottle, I should tell you the favorites (and why I think they were) at different price levels.
At under $30, and the overall most ordered, was the J Laurens 2014 Cremant de Limoux which had a very nice balance between fruit and acidity. It is on sale at 19.99 16.99 for six or more bottles.
For under $50, the Pierre Paillard Extra Brut les Parcels at 48.50, 41.23 for six or more, had the most orders. This was followed by 2 great values in Blanc de Blancs: the rounder Le Mesnil Grand Cru Brut at $42, 35.70 six or more, and leaner, crisper Grongnet Blanc de Blancs at $43, 36.55. At similar prices people also ordered two of the grand marques, Deutz at $46,39.10 and Taittinger at 48.99, 40.79.
At slightly higher prices, a number of people ordered the heady Pol Roger Brut White Foil at $52, 44.20 and the spicy rich Philipponat Royale Reserve Brut at $55, 46.75.
Quite a number of people found the rich, long lees-aged Corbon 2005 Blanc de Blancs a great value at $62, 57.20. An equal number liked the very engaging Delamotte Blanc de Blancs at $70, 59.50.
Above $70, the most ordered were the English Nyetimber at $75, 63.75 and the classic Billecart Salmon Rose @ $90, 76.50. Billecart was the most popular rose at the tasting, followed by the organic Marguet at 59, 49.99, the very pretty Deutz at 75, 63.75, and Taittinger at 78, 66.30.
A personal note... When people, whether professional or wine-lovers taste a lot of different wines, those of more finesse, delicacy, or nuance can be lost behind the more assertive. We loved some wines in this category that I think were overlooked in the tasting.
Among these are the Suenen Blanc de Blancs Cuvee C&C, Larmandier Bernier Longitude, Alexandre Filaine DMY, 2012 Mousse Special Club, Leclerc Briant Reserve, and the  Margaine Cuvee Le Brut.
The new Jacquesson release Cuvee 740 is extraordinary, but it is a baby and will take several years to show its qualities. some is going in my cellar.
All of these wines are still available, although some are in short supply. Sale prices are good as long as they are available until the end of December.
