Friday: Poggio La Noce

with Enzo Schiano

These wines will arrive in about 2 weeks. The olive oil in three

Peter writes,

We had a very special tasting Friday evening with owner Enzo of Poggio La Noce in Florence. He carefully explained the special care he takes with the beautiful Sangiovese vines to produce wines of elegance and purity. All his wines and the olive oil are organic

We began the tasting with bread and the 2018 Poggio La Noce Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The beautiful deep bright green color was the first clue that we were in for something very special. The aromas and flavors were fresh, floral fruit and peppery and clean. The texture just made everyone want to go back for more. It is impossible to imagine a better oil. This will arrive in about three weeks.

Poggio La Noce Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Superb 25/bottle 500ml

The first red was the 2015 Gigetto which is a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Teroldego. This is made from the younger vines and is a fresh fruit forward style that is very easy to like. All of the wines are named after variations of the name of a childhood friend of Enzo’s. We followed this with the 2016 Gigino which is 100% Sangiovese and a brilliant example of what this grape can achieve. The bright cherry fruit is framed by flowers and spice and elegant texture. The 2013 Gigio we can say is the most serious wine of the group with great potential for aging. This is 90% Sangiovese and 10% of a special old clone of Colorino which adds depth and structure. So these are three different expressions of organic Sangiovese and all are terrific. Scott G said he was amazed.

We finished with a particular and rare type of Vin Santo. The 2011 Ejia is an Occhio di Pernice (eye of the partridge) and Is 100% Sangiovese. The wine has to spend five years in small Italian wood barrels before being bottled. It is a sweet wine of contemplation.

Thank you for a great tasting, Enzo.
