Bruno Rocca Barbaresco

Peter writes, "A healthy band of Piedmont enthusiasts showed up last week to meet Luisa Rocca and taste through the wonderful wines made by her brother Francesco and her father Bruno."
March 1, 2018

Today the wines of Barbaresco are recognized to be among the finest in the world and Bruno Rocca was one of the leaders in producing this result.

Luisa began the tasting with the 2015 Barbera d’Alba. This is a wine made from very old vines in rocky soil which gives the wine a concentrated texture and well behaved acidity. The next five wines are all various avatars of Nebbiolo. First we tried the 2015 Langhe Nebbiolo Fralu. This wine is made from younger vines grown in various vineyards and is made to be approachable when young.

Next we sampled the 2014 Barbaresco. Again this is a blend of fruit from different vineyards, in this case from older vines. This is wine made in the traditional historic style before single vineyard bottling became the rage in both Barbaresco and Barolo. The 2014 Barbaresco Rabaja is one of the single vineyard bottlings. Rabaja is certainly one of the best situated vineyards in Barbaresco and produces a wine of great character,

To complete the tasting we had the two Riservas. The 2012 Barbaresco Curra Riserva is made by Francesco. Luisa introduced this one as the epitome of elegance and the wine showed a subtle complexity and very long finish. Last we had the 2011 Barbaresco Maria Adelaide which is Bruno’s tribute to his mother. This wine is made in a more powerful style and was a favorite for many. In terms of tasters’ response, Bob J summed it up by commenting “All these wines are fantastic”.

We would like to thank Luisa very much for doing a great tasting for us.
