This Week's Tasting

Ramey Wine Cellars, with George Staikos from the winery
September 12, 2018

We have followed David Ramey and his wines for over 30 years now through his stint at the then groundbreaking Matanzas Creek, his establishment of Chalk Hill as a major winery, and his times at Dominus and Rudd Estate. To all of these he brought not only a fine technical knowledge but a rich intuition as to what makes a wine not only delicious and fine.

In the 20 years that he and his wife Carla have had their own Ramey Cellars, they have brought these qualities to full fruition. We proud to welcome his associate George Staikos to conduct tonight's tasting.

David makes equally fine Chardonnay and Cabernet. We will start with a new project, his 2016 Sidebar Sauvignon Blanc,a well priced one made from Lake County grapes. His 2014 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is a standard four solid California renditions of that grape. The Carneros Chardonnay from Larry Hyde's vineyard is exceptional, rich and creamy.

The Claret is a bordeaux bland from the execprtional 2015 vintage. I have not yet tasted the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, the workhorse of the Remy Reds, but advance refuse our exceptional. I did however love the 2013 Annum, tasted earlier this year. It is layered, substantial, and complex worthy of being Ramey's best Napa blend.

White

2016 Sidebar Sauvignon Blanc; Aroma: clean herbal , nutty, leesy note, ; Mouth: bright acid, rather dense, spicy, clean, lemony with deeper notes; Very Good Plus 18.99; Mixed Case, 17.09; Case, 16.14

2014 Ramey Chardonnay Sonoma Coast; Aroma: rounded frrsh, plump, loioghtly oaked, ; Mouth: plump rather full, very rich, very full, bright acid fullish, clean lively ,strong sweet acid; Very Good Plus40; Mixed Case, 36; Case, 34

2014 Ramey Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard (Carneros) One of flagships in David Ramey's range, the 2014 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is also one of the creamier, richer wines in this range. Stone fruit, mint, butter and light French oak notes give the wine its voluptuous, racy personality and oily feel. There is plenty of freshness and nuance to play off the fruit. 66; Mixed Case, 59.4; Case, 56.1

Red

2015 Ramey Claret “Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Claret offers notes of blackberries, kirsch and red currants with hints of earth and dried herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate is plush, velvety and open for business, with some baking spice notes coming through on the finish.”- Wine Advocate 48; Mixed Case, 43.2; Case, 40.80

2014 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Vinous "super-expressive today. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, licorice and new leather flesh out in an impeccably balanced, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon long on class and personality. Once again, David Ramey has produced a jewel of a wine." 59; Mixed Case, 53.1; Case, 50.15

2013 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Annum; Aroma: very dark rather dense, heady very full, heady full, very restrained chocolate, veery rich; Mouth: very dense smooth full, very rich, fine acid tannins, clean long; Excellent -Outstanding 99; Mixed Case, 89.1; Case, 84.15
