This Week's Tasting

Great Whites From Italy’s Northeast
August 8, 2018

Peter writes, "It seems like a good time to taste from two of the greatest producers of white wine in Italy. Pieropan is the oldest and most venerable estate in Soave. Many of you know that Soave became one of the most famous Italian whites and then suffered due to overproduction in the vineyards. Pieropan never backtracked and in fact you can see tremendous innovations in their character over the years.""

Family in Pieropan

He continues,

We will begin tonight with the 2016 Pieropan Soave Classico. This is a bright crisp white with depth. Next we will introduce Kellerai Cantina Terlano from Alto Adige. The 2017 Terlan Pinot Bianco shows a little more weight and richness.

Pieropan was the first estate in Soave to bottle single vineyard wines. The 2015 Pieropan SoaveCalvarino is a select site outside the village and is planted to both Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grapes. This is a classic dry white with complexity and long life. Meanwhile up in Alto Adige Terlan did the same thing. The single vineyard 2017 Terlan Sauvignon Blanc Winkl is also a classic with gooseberry and lime notes and a balanced finish.

We will finish with the flagship wines of the two estates. The 2015 Pieropan Soave La Rocca is made with Garganega grown on a terraced vineyard just below the medieval castle in Soave. This wine has richness, depth and individual character in spades. Nino Pieropan was very proud of this vineyard and today his sons Dario and Andrea make the wine and share the feeling. The 2014 Terlan Pinot BiancoVorberg Riserva reminds me that you really can find some of the greatest white wines in the world in Italy.

All of these wines are great value. The single vineyard wines are beautiful now and also age extremely well.
