Bordeaux 2017 en Premeurs

Mixed Feelings
June 3, 2018

Well, here we are again. The Sox are battling the Yankees for first place and Bordeaux is releasing the “en premeurs” pricing for their most recent vintage. I feel more comfortable with the Sox than I do with the 2017 wines of Bordeaux. This is not to say that the vintage is not very good. Reports from sources that we respect indicate that although there was a damaging frost in the Spring 2017 the quality has turned out to be better than 2014 but not up to the level of 2015 and 2016. Many vineyards lost a significant amount of their normal production.
The issue that exists is that the pricing of the 2017’s in dollars reflects the change in value of the dollar over the past year. In general the euro was worth 1.06 dollars when the 2016’s were purchased. The euro today is worth around 1.20 dollars (as of 5/30 it was down to 1.15). In general, the euro prices for 2017 are lower by 10 to 20 per cent from the euro prices for 2016. The value decline in the dollar all but wipes out the lower euro prices of the 2017s. Thus, as you will see that  our 2017 prices  are lower than the 2016 , but not by much.
That being said the most successful communes seem to be St. Estephe and Pauillac. The wines of Lilian Ladouys, Ormes de Pez, and Lynch Bages show promise and value.
We will be receiving the pricing for the most highly requested wines over the next few weeks. I will add as soon as I receive. And we are certainly open to requests.
