This Week's Tasting
Argentina, Mostly Malbec
January 25, 2017
Some nice hearty winterweight stew-friendly wines from Argentina this week.
Tomero is the label produced by Carlos Pulenta with fruit sourced from his father's vineyards in the Uco valley. The 2014 Tomero Malbec shows great depth of fruit. The wine is aged 80% in steel and 20% new French oak for eight months. This is also one of the most popular Malbecs in Argentina.
the Cuvelier family , owners of Bordeaux's highly regarded Ch. Leoville Poyferre in St. Julien, wrre one of the founding families of Michel Rolland's Clos Los Siet for the last fw years they have been making their own wine under the Cuvelier los Andes label. the style is more classic, more Leoville than Rolland, with niely etched structure that gives definition to the wine.
California winemaker extraordinaire Paul Hobbs is the consulting winemaker at Riglos, whose vineyards lie in Tupungato high in the Andes. The wines again have definition and power, exemplified in their reserve Gran Malbec
Alma Negra (dark soul) is the creation of Ernesto Catena, scion of the Catena family known for being an artistic bohemian. In 2002 he began Ernesto Catena Vineyards. The 2013 Alma Negra M Blend is one of his enigmatic wines. We know that it is a blend of Bonarda and Malbec yet there could be something else in here as well and we do not know the percentages.
Lamadrid's single vineyard 2013 Cabernet Franc begins the richer heavier part in our tasting. From Argentina's a single vineyard at over 3,000 feet elevation in Argentina's Lujan de Cuyo, it is naturally fermented Unfined and unfiltered, aged in French oak, this punches above its weight in richness and depth.
Bodega Renacer was founded by Patricio Reich to make classic Malbec. Along the way, with help from consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini, he launched an Argentine Amarone style wine. The 2013 Bodega Renacer Enamore is a blend of Malbec, Merlot, Bonarda and Cabernet Franc made with air dried grapes. This gives a wine of great concentration and complexity.
