2016 John Duval Annexus Mataro

Deep, Dark and Brooding
November 14, 2018

One of John Duval's best wines was not yet available his tasting last month. The first vintage of his Annexus (Reserve) Mataro, a Mourvedre made from 115 year old vines grown on sandy soil in Barossa, is extraordinarily fine, It has the heady leather and licorice notes you also taste in the Mourvedres the French make in Provence. It has a similar fine acid structure, but with a smooth resilient texture that those wines take years to achieve. It is a brooding wine that promises much with a few years of age.Strongly recommended but very limited

2016 John Duval Annexus Mataro; Aroma: Heady low toned, dense, lightly herbal, sweet, very dense & full, rich with anise & wood notes; Mouth: Sweet very clean rather fine acidity, nicely dense, smooth textured, fine acid, clean light spice, very long young; Excellent (- Outstanding?) 65; Mixed Case, 58.5; Case, 55.25

New On the Shelf

2016 Lioco Carignan Sativa

Eric Asimov wrote of the pleasures one can get from carignan-based wines in last Wednesday's New York Times and recommended this wine. Intrigued, we asked of it to try. From very old vines in cool climate Mendocino, it has the tangy spice of Carignan allied to a cool, rounded cherry-berry fruit. It is a delight, not too tart, not too fruity, also a recommendation for Thanksgiving.

Incidentally despite its name, no cannabis was harmed in the production of this wine.

2016 Lioco Carignan Sativa; Color: medium dark, ; Aroma: heady sweet very pretty, lifted, light sweet bright red cherry; Mouth: smooth clean bright acidity, firm, juicy , very forward, clean, nicely tart, rather pretty; Very Good Plus 33; Mixed Case, 29.7; Case, 28.05
